Learning About Diabetes and What to Watch Out For

Our special guest for this show is Lisa Atkinson: Leading Fitness by Phone® Coach, specializing in diabetes and co-developer of Living Free: Simple and Easy Steps to Managing and Preventing Diabetes.

GuestsLearn about the different types of diabetes and the symptoms to watch for to avoid becoming full blown diabetic. Find out why people are told to exercise and eat in a balanced way to manage or prevent diabetes.

When people find out they have insulin resistance or high blood sugar levels, the first thing they are told is to change their diet, get some exercise and take some medications. They are also shown how to read their blood glucose levels. This can be overwhelming, confusing and tough to follow through on. And doctors, nurse practitioners and educators don’t always explain things well. Lisa Atkinson knows what that is like. She had gestational diabetes and had to learn this on her own. Then when she became a lifestyle fitness coach, she teamed up with other coaches, including Alice Greene – our show co-host, to create a CD program that educates and assists those that are feeling the burden of having or getting diabetes.

Fresh Perspectives

Our special guest for this show is Gretchen Becker: Author of The First Year with Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed.

GuestsHear what it is really like to be diabetic, and learn some new ways to create a healthy approach to dealing with the disease that is positive and affirming.

Learning you have a diagnosis of Diabetes is often a rude awakening that disrupts your daily lifestyle. It affects your daily routine, requires changes in your thinking, and forces you to do what it takes to maintain normal blood sugar levels. It can also impact how you feel about yourself and how you relate to others. There is a lot to know, important things to do, and things to consider. When it happened to Gretchen Becker in 1996 she took it a step further and educated herself in every aspect of the disease. Now she is a “patient-expert” helping others come to terms with their diagnosis and how to live with it successfully.
